Republicans In The NewsFOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: "Woody" Herman Wood Out Of Touch Baltimore County Council Democrats Stand Against Term Limits TOWSON, MD - In an all-to-typical display of hypocrisy, Councilman John Olszewski a sixteen-year veteran of the Baltimore County Council told the Baltimore Sun that a legislative proposal to institute term limits was tantamount to "grandstanding". The legislation, submitted by Councilman David Marks, would place a question on the November, 2010 Presidential ballot requiring that members of the Baltimore County Council step down after completing three terms. Current Council Representatives would be allowed 3 additional terms beyond their existing service. "John Olszewski and the rest of the Democrats are not against term limits," said Steve Kolbe, Chairman of the Baltimore County Republican Central Committee. "They are against the voters deciding." Olszewski is the father of a political dynasty. Since 1998, he has served on the Baltimore County Council. His son John Olszewski, Jr. serves as a member of the Maryland House of Delegates. Democrat cohorts of Olszewski's weighed in with near unanimity. Kenneth Oliver, a three-term Councilman and criminal who in 2009 plead guilty to stealing funds from his campaign for re-election said that the Council has been "financially sound" for the last thirty years and has been "managed very well". Oliver also rejected calls to repay funds taken from the taxpayers in 2011 while he was personally in breach of the Baltimore County Charter. "The strangleholds these Democrats have on the County Council grant them the sole power to redraw the electoral map," said Kolbe. "Over the two decades Councilman Olszewski has influenced this process, we have seen our elections become less competitive. A convicted criminal has won re-election. Republican districts have become a deeper shade of red, while Democrat districts have become more blue. This legislation, if it were to pass, would certainly remind politicians that they are never above the law."
